18.01.2020 – Wearing Undergarments That Fit Properly. Method 1 of Index and middle finger, guys.
I’m sure this has been asked before, but I’ve been doing some research online and have seen so many conflicting answers, that I thought I’d ask on here myself!
On some sites I’ve read it says legs need to be covered all the way down to ankles, on others it says as long as your knees are covered it’s fine.
Some sites say shoulders need to be covered but bare arms are fine, others say anything without sleeves isn’t acceptable.
Dresses – If I was going for a meal somewhere ‘nice’, like one of the hotels, am I able to wear a nicer, party style dress? Or would this involve showing too much skin and therefore be inappropriate?
I have visited Bahrain numerous times – is the dress code in Fujairah the same as there? In Bahrain I’ve largely worn whatever I’ve wanted without any issue, although I did tend to stick a cardigan on if I was going out and about and was only wearing a vest top.
But I’ve worn vest tops, shorts, skirts, dresses and open shoes there and never had an issue. Is Fujairah similar, or is it likely to be stricter?
I know there’s a tonne of information about the dress code in Dubaiand I’ve looked at that, but I’ve also read that Fujairah is apparently more conservative than Dubai, so I’m not sure if what’s acceptable in Dubai would be acceptable in Fujairah.

Hi, Fuj is nowhere near as developed as Dubai. If you’re at a beach hotel, it’s fine to dress as you would if you were on holiday but, out and about in the ‘town’, I’d probably err more on the side of caution, but not to the extent of ankle length.
Just base it on what you’re wearing to work, but more relaxed. It’s not an emirate with a huge expat population, so you’ll probably find everyone knows everyone and you’ll soon have it all sussed.
A bit like Bahrain really. TA is really geared up to holidaymakers. I’d suggest joining expatwoman, expat forum and any other similar sites you can find by using google.
I hope you’ve settled in well in Fujairah! I am heading over at the end of August – also teaching, and have no idea what type of things to take with me – wardrobe wise as well as teaching resources!

Which school are you going to, if you don’t mind me asking? In terms of the dress code, I actually find things really quite laid back.
Obviously it’s hot, so that’s something to consider when buying clothes. But basically at work, legs completely covered, bare arms are ok but not bare shoulders, you need to have sleeves of at least t shirt length but I normally wear a full sleeved or short sleeved cardigan over the top.

The big thing not to trip up on with work is tight clothes. When I first started, I was so busy worrying about keeping covered up that I didn’t think about the tightness of my clothes, and I got pulled by the head teacher on my second day for wearing a dress that was too tight!
Basically, you can’t show that you have any kind of shape at all. Sounds like a joke, but it’s true haha.

Nothing too tight around the chest or bum. Everything has to be baggy. I bought a couple of t shirts to wear for work, but bought them a size too big so that they hang off me rather than cling to me, and have a cardigan for over the top.
So yeah, work clothes – legs covered, shoulders covered, be conscious of the heat so try and go for light fabrics instead of the heavy duty stuff you might wear in the UK, e.
Outside of work I’ve actually found things to be really quite laid back.

I’ve seen plenty of people wandering round the local shopping centres in little shorts and vest tops. I personally wouldn’t do that, as I find it a bit disrespectful, but in the time I’ve been there, it sort of seems to be as long as you’re not parading down the main street in a bikini, you’re fine.
I tend to wear vest tops and cropped leggings round the apartment, then if I’m going out I’ll throw on a lightweight fabric floaty top over the top, to cover the tops of my arms, chest, and hangs down to cover my bum as the leggings are obviously tight!
Sort of like a beach cover up type thing. Essentially you have to find a balance between being respectful to the local culture, but also not giving yourself heat stroke!
It’s incredibly hot, and even worse, incredibly humid, so while you want to cover up, you also need to make sure you’re not making yourself ill with the heat.
Essentially as I say, as long as you’re sensible and aren’t wandering down the street in a bikini, you’re fine. I never wear anything on my bottom half that is shorter than my knees, and I only wear vest tops without some kind of cover up over the top when I’m in my apartment, but I’ve seen women wandering round the mall in hot pants, so you know!

Sounds stupid, think I’ve got the hang of the clothing side but do you have to have closed shoes? I hope not although the sight of my feet would be distasteful to anyone!!
Just stumbled upon this – it’s really useful! Am being posted out to Fujairah Area in two weeks time so would really appreciate any other advice – to say am nervous is an understatement!!
Is it easy to get a car there or am I looking at Dubai? Also how easy is it to get an alcohol license Know should really be worrying about that yet but hey!!
