Time and time again, my clients and our forum members ask which style of topper to wear over a sleeveless dress. This is especially the case with dressy sleeveless dresses.

As soon as you add a topper, you loose the cut, silhouette and wow-factor that makes the dress look sensational. Casual sleeveless dresses tend to be more conducive to a topper addition because the styles and fabrics lend themselves better to the relaxed, layered look.

Prevention is better than cure.

Sometimes sleeved dresses are harder to find, making the sleeveless option a faster purchase. And sometimes the wearer is comfortable exposing her arms, but needs a topper when things cool down.

Here are my favourite ways to top a sleeveless dress. A straight, formfitting dress is usually easier to top than a fit-and-flare style.

Sometimes a dainty and short gold, silver or beaded cardigan can work over a formal sleeveless dress, but they are hard to find. Faux fur stoles are fun for dressier events and add a nice bit of retro drama.

Shorter bomber jackets inject a bit of on trend Sporty Luxe to a sleeveless dress. I wear a sleeveless dress with a cropped sweatshirt.

Appreciate the rundown, Angie. This is a dilemma and agree that it is easier to start with sleeves if you need coverage for temperature or other reasons.

For quite awhile though, sleeved dresses have required an extra diligent search, so your options make sense. I must say, I rarely feel that the dress is enhanced by a topper, mostly look for something that works.

I also prefer to add a lightweight, dress coat, though often one with simple lines. I needed that! I am the dumb, dumber and dumbest of dressology.

I usually am stumped for toppers on dresses which are all sleeveless BTW! My cropped denim jacket seems to be my only favorite topper over them.

Now I know exactly why! Thanks Angie! At least now I know what to look for.

A denim jacket is always great and I have some cropped cardigans with unusual cuts that are reserved for this purpose too. Wow, is this timely.

I have two sleeveless dresses for two formal religious events and need to wear a topper during the services. But a great fall and winter topper as is my regular cropped moto.

Now I am a thrift store addict and toppers are a main Steuben in my closet all 4 seasons. From vest of ever imaginable sort to short sleeved crop jacket, to my absolute favorites lace and sequined shawls.

I accept and am very comfortable with my body.

But I believe in empowerment of self and it gets hot and very humid here. I actually adore the look of a cropped, boxy jacket over a sleek, tailored or even fluid dress.

I am always looking for cropped toppers for dresses. Both my denim jackets, my motos, my shrunken blazers, and my capelet all work.

My silky bomber works with some styles too. Where I run into trouble is not with sleeveless or not, but with dress waistlines. I actually prefer dresses with NO waistline or waistband although waist definition a la princess seams is fine for many reasons primarily my short waistedness and those play well with toppers in general.

Denim and moto jackets from the Juniors dept often do the trick. Thank you for this wonderfully helpful list, Angie. With hot flashes still flashing, a sleeveless layer comes in handy.

The kimono style and sheer drapey cardigans work best. Denim, bomber, and moto jackets and trenches help extend the season for my sleeveless dresses, as do my Chanel type jacket and sweater-jackets.

Thank you for great tips! Since I like wearing sleeveless casual dresses for summer, I run into this problem every year! I agree that cardigans work best when they are either cropped or long and drapey.

Like Diana, I have never had significant issues with toppers for sleeveless dresses. I typically wear the toppers for warmth only.

For more casual and semi-dressy occasions my cropped denim jackets and various motos have worked well.

For cocktail dresses, which are typically in my wardrobe fitted and above the knee, a regular length tuxedo blazer has worked well. More than topper issues, this post highlighted that I need to figure out how I feel about showing my arms.

Something to ponder. Depending on the dress, a short, fitted stretch lace possibly sheer-ish would work, I think. Phoebe, wearing a sleeveless dress like a skirt is a great idea.

I love your cropped sweatshirt pairing. Finding jackets that are short enough when you are a short waisted petite is challenging.

You are so right Angie. I already pretty much knew I needed to stop buying sleeveless dresses until I get more comfortable with my arms or change them!

I do find that high necked sheath styles can work ok with some open cardigans.

I have 2 dresses packed and ready to return due to this issue. The dresses just lose something with the toppers.

I bought a casual navy ponte knit sleeveless fit and flare dress from Ann Taylor this summer and I think that because of the shape and casualness of the fabric, that a white denim jacket looks great with it.

I would never wear it with a topper because of arm flab and coldness issues.

I only have 2 sleeveless dresses and no other sleeveless garments. The other, a black linen sleeveless sheath I am OK with wearing with a gauzy, flowy pashmina like wrap.

I have been unable to find any dresses with sleeves that I like. Yeah — there is an answer! Even dresses with sleeves might need an additional layer for warmth.

It truly does depend on the dress style, and that is where great care needs to be taken. I prefer sheath style dresses anyway, so this has made the task easier.
